FOR Regional Director of Soccer Development Iain King SCB Skill Centre is where it all starts for young Cape Breton players.
That's why launch day of the programs each Fall/Winter is always a special one for the experienced Scottish coach who moved to the island in May 2022 and also acts as the CAPERS Academy Technical Director as part of his working remit.
Iain smiled: "I'm well into my fourth year of the project here and it's great to see so many kids who started out in the Skill Centre programs reaching the heights of the Soccer Nova Scotia EXCEL programs now. Yet that's just one aspect of the success of these programs, the main point is JOY.
"By that I mean all the smiles we see every Saturday morning during first Minis and then Skill Centre as we cater for the kids on the island from the ages of U5 right through to U12.
"They are coached by players we have educated through our own system to become soccer leaders and that too is so gratifying to see.
"This year we have extended the programs through to the end of April from their beginning the Saturday after Thanksgiving and we look forward to welcoming established players back and seeing some new faces take their first soccer steps with us."
This past summer both Iain and CBU CAPERS Men's Varsity Head Coach Deano Morley dedicated a big chunk of their time and expertise to guiding the CAPERS Academy's youngest teams in the U13AA Nova Scotia Soccer Leagues.
And Iain reasoned: "That was a conscious decision to place our most experienced coaches with our youngest players to help them develop and grow with the correct soccer habits.
"All of those players started out in Skill Centre as have so many of our dedicated players with clubs across the island. It's not only a hugely popular program but one that is vital to the growth of the game on Cape Breton."
