CAPERS Academy prospect Matthew Cormier was an inspirational figure at the heart of Team Nova Scotia U14 Boys' Atlantic Championships win at the weekend.
The U15AAA Boys centre-back had an outstanding tournament in Halifax that was topped off as he powered home a superb header in the 2-2 Final draw with New Brunswick.
A late equaliser for NB meant the Gold Medal game went to penalties but the NS Boys - expertly coached by Kieran Collins and Luke Berryman - held their nerve to win out 4-2 in the shootout.
Regional Director of Soccer Development Iain King said: "Matthew's journey is a source of great pride for everyone in the CAPERS Academy ever since he was guided through the Soccer Cape Breton League as a fledgling player at Whitney Pier SC.
"He won 13s Provincials last year and has now followed that up with another gold medal at the 14s level. Most importantly, though, he is always humble and continues to learn his craft as a young soccer player.
"The feedback we had all year from his Provincial coaches was that he was a model pupil within their program and a credit to the island and that's what matters most. We are thrilled for him after his latest success."
